Both tournaments follow an identical format. First comes the regular season, with all 12 clubs being placed in one group for a double round-robin format. This means all the teams face off twice. After the regular season is wrapped up, the top four sides move on to the playoff stage, which is a two-legged knockout tournament.

The team that finishes first in the regular season faces off against the side that finished fourth while the second-placed and third-placed clubs lock horns. Those that emerge triumphant move on to the final to battle it out for the tournament title. If the winner of the regular season is unable to win the playoff, a grand final is staged between them and the playoff champion to decide who walks away with the title. Both the final and grand final (if it takes place) are played over two legs.

Added to the trophy, this league hands out tickets to the CONCACAF Champions League. The teams that win the championship in the Apertura and Clausura tournaments earn their spot in the subsequent year’s CCL. They are joined by the team with the most points during the year that did not end up winning a title.
