The Communication and Information Sector’s mission is to promote freedom of expression, media development and media literate societies, and to build knowledge societies through fostering universal access to information, innovation for sustainable development and the preservation of documentary heritage. (The role of this vacant position does not include responsibility for UNESCO’s wider external communications, which is managed by the Division for Communications and Public Engagement.)
OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, the authority of the Director of Division for Partnerships and Operational Programme Monitoring, and the direct supervision of the Chief of Section for Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists and of the relevant Programme Specialist in charge, the Incumbent will work towards achievement of UNESCO’s objective to address challenges and opportunities on freedom of expression, particularly the safety of journalists and the issue of impunity, in line with the 41 C/5 Major Programme V’s Main Line of Action l, Expected Result 1.
In particular, the Incumbent will work towards the achievement of the extra-budgetary projects “Strengthening the role of judicial actors on Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists in Africa”, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, “Fostering the Role of the Judiciary Systems in promoting Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists” funded by Open Society Foundations, and the Multi-Donor Programme on Freedom of Expression and the Safety of Journalists.
The post is located in the Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists Section of the Communication and Information Sector (CI/FEJ) at UNESCO Headquarters. The incumbent will work in a collaborative team environment and will be responsible to undertake the following:
